The construction of the Victoria Diamond Jubilee Hall started on 31st December 1897 when the foundation stone was laid and the hall was complete in 1898 and was opened in November 1898 with a grand concert November 1898. Major Randell Jackson who payed 50% of the original hall cost and the other was raised by the people in the village.
The hall was in community hands until 1931 where the last member of the hall committee , where it was then handed over to the local parish council to run on behalf of the inhabitants of the village. Then to Dingwall and District, Ross and Cromarty District Council, Highland Regional Council and then Highland Council. In 2011 the hall transferred from the Highland Council to Kiltearn Community Council. In 2015 the new community council started the process of looking at transferring the hall into a community group. In 2020 the hall is going to transfer to the Evanton Community Trust. There will be a new hall management committee who will run the hall on a day to day basis. We will keep you posted with what is happening.
To this day the hall has continued to it original purpose as a meeting place for the people of Evanton.
DJ Hall Next Steps
The agreement between the Kiltearn Community Council (KCC) and the Evanton Community Trust (ECT), to transfer ownership of the Diamond Jubilee Hall, is now entering its final stage. A Hall Management Group, consisting of two members of KCC, two members of ECT, representatives of regular hall user groups and other members of the community, has already been set up to look at ways to improve and develop the hall once ownership is transferred.
The first step will be to source funding to employ a development officer who will be tasked with consulting with the whole community to explore what you would like to see taking place not just in the hall but in the village as well. We already have lots of ideas from the public meeting held earlier this year, but we want to hear from everyone! We also have plans to upgrade the building – a recent building survey recommended new windows, a new kitchen, new toilet facilities and a new heating system.
We will be actively looking for funding to carry out this work. We recently posted on our Facebook page to find out if there was interest in the village in starting a community market. The response was very positive. Due to other similar events happening before Christmas, we have decided to defer progressing this until after New Year. Watch this space.
